Eighth Street Elementary School

Eighth Street Elementary School was originally constructed in 1914 and is the oldest elementary school in continuous service in Florida. The building is on the National Historic Register and is located within nationally dedicated Historic District. This $2 million dollar renovation consisted of complete building systems replacement of mechanical, electric, plumbing, data/communications, flooring, windows, and all interior finishes. We had to evaluate this work very carefully to make sure that it met with functional, aesthetic and budgetary requirements. New additions included a three-stop elevator, fire sprinkler and fire alarm systems. Care was taken to make these improvements while enhancing the original historic beauty of the building, including 10′ high windows, 14′ high ceilings, wood stairs and balustrades and wood floors. The exterior work encompasses a complete window replacement, brick cleanup and pointing, as well as landscaping that further accentuated and enhanced the historic fabric of the surrounding neighborhood.
